Zanzibar o “Unguja”, The Spice Island, has a history dating back to the 1st century AD, when the Greek and Roman ships sailed down the east coast of Africa. The Stone Town of Zanzibar is a UNESCO World Heritage: its architecture and urban structure, customs and habits, are the outstanding material manifestation of cultural fusion and harmonization. Its townscape is virtually intact and its buildings reflect a culture which has brought together and homogenized different elements. It has much to offer, including fine restaurants serving local, Asian, Arabic, European and Western cuisine, it is a colourful bustling experience not to miss.

Zanzibar had great symbolic importance in the suppression of slavery, since it was one of the main slave-trading ports in East Africa and also the base from which its opponents such as David Livingstone conducted their campaign.

Unguja, as Zanzibar is also called, consists of two islands: Zanzibar itself and Pemba. Although not too far from each other they have different climates and vegetation. Like most of other Indian Ocean Islands, the monsoon season starts in early March until the end of May.

Far south of Zanzibar lies another balmy island, Mafia. The only means of getting there is by light aircraft (25 min).

The Hakuna Majiwe Resort

It is situated in Paje, on the central eastern coast of Zanzibar at about 40km from Stone Town airport and is easily accessibile, about 50 minutes, to an asphalt road.

In kiswahili, Hakuna Majiwe means “a place with no stones”. In fact, the Hakuna Majiwe lodge is located in the middle of a beach with fine white sand “without any rocks” and is surrounded only by palm trees that border the Indian Ocean. The lodge takes up 250 meters of the beach on the south east coast of Zanzibar, between Paje (2 km north) and Jambiani (3km south).

The beach is about 10km long and has is marvelous to walk on. There are no other turistic buildings around the area but just a few small places where one can sit down under the shade and have a drink. There is a constant breeze in the evening that keeps the mosquitos away.

Accomodation at Hakuna Majiwe

All of the rooms have wood flooring and are subdivided into 10 double bungalows, all of which are beach front. There are 16 standard rooms, 2 suites that have two bedrooms, and 2 homes that have the possibility of adding to extra beds. The standard rooms, which have a large veranda, have a bathroom with shower, bidet and sink, a double bed with a mosquito net, a wardrobe, a safe and a fan.The restaurant is located in the center of the lodge in the middle of the beach, with a bar and a lounge area. There is a large swimming pool (27 x 12 meters), a massagge area, a dwelling on the seaside and a shop.

Services at Hakuna Majiwe

The management that is looked after by “Ora Group Hotels” guarantees an excellent standard. The restaurant and bar are furnished in a warm and typical African style reflecting the place itself. The restaurant which has a buffet service offers Italian, International and the local cuisine characterized by grilled meat, vegetables, fresh fish, sweets and an abundance of tropical fruits fresh sliced at the moment requested. A typical Zanzibar dinner and a special dinner ball is held once a week. You have the possibility to reserve a romantic lobster dinner (with an extra cost applied). You may also relax and sit in the lounge and taste a large variety of beers, wines, liquors and cocktails at the bar. During the day you have the possibility to buy any excursions or safarii trips or ask any other information to our assistant.To take you through the sweet nights of the resort you may choose from a relaxing evening listening to soft music in the lounge, watching a African swing concert, a Masai concert or other small forms of entertainment that surrounds the island. MEDICAL SERVICE There is an Italian doctor available for the hotel clients located in the medical clinic in Uroa. The service must be paid for.

Sport & Activities at Hakuna Majiwe

These are the suggested activities : Snorkelling around the reef, bathing with the Kizimkazi dolphins, deep sea fishing, Tour of the herbs, Stone Town Tour, Jozani Forest Tour. It is possible to rent motor boats or sail boats, bikes, motorcycles and cars. Furthermore, Hakuna Majiwe offers a bus shuttle to and from the airport, a safe, a laundry service, a tailor’s shop, room service, relaxing massages and organizes and celebrates weddings.

The lodge has a PADI center/school, where scuba courses and patents and held, and where diving in different places of the archipelago are organized. Visitors often think of Kenya as a synonym for Safari. Excursions to the tribal areas of Turkana and Samburu are the most known and appreciated. The Masai Mara National Reserve, west of Nairobi, is one of the most beautiful game reserves in the Country and is protected by UNESCO: the Mara, as it is called, is inhabited by the Masai who hunt and work the land side by side with the many species of wild animals that populate the reserve’s 320 km²: lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippopotamuses.
Kenya-bound travellers are attracted by its many natural reserves: among them, the Marsabit National Park & Reserve, where wild animals live protected by the forest not far from the beautiful Lake Paradise, a volcanic lake surrounded by an enchanting natural landscape. Other destinations of natural interest are Amboseli Park, the Mijikenda Kaya forest (another UNESCO heritage site) and Baringo Lake.

Magical Malindi

Malindi and Watamu Marine Parks:

These parks were established in 1968 and are the first of their kind in Africa. The ocean blue waters here host a wide variety of corals. Within the coral kingdoms that abound herein, multi-coloured fishes can be seen ducking in and out of this extensive reef. The coral gardens offer spectacular areas for goggling. In these gardens you are bound to see different species of coral fish like the Angelfish, Butterfly fish, Triggerfish and even have an opportunity of watching the Surgeonfish at work. Many glass-bottomed boats to take you for tours in the coral gardens are available. Scuba diving can also be arranged within the hotels.

Casino Malindi:

Nairobi

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital city, the largest in Eastern Africa and the fourth largest in the whole African continent. Lamu

Lamu, the most ancient city in Kenya, lies on a beautiful coast of its homonymous island. It is almost wholly inhabited by Muslims and it used to be a commercial sea hub. Zanzibar Area Guide

The island of Zanzibar is in the Indian Ocean, 50km off the Eastern coast of Africa, a few degrees South of the Equator. It joined Tanzania in 1964, known as Tanganyika at the time, and since then it has been a part of what is now known as the United Republic of Tanzania. However, it has its own Government, Parliament and President.

The largest town is Zanzibar, which includes the ancient part Stone Town. Among the many islands forming its archipelago, Unguja and Pemba are the most extended and inhabited. The language spoken here is Ki-Swhaili, a result of the contact between the Bantu and the Middle Eastern civilizations, declared UNESCO World Heritage in 1960. English is also spoken, along with French and Italian. The most common religion is Islam and a very small minority of people are either Christians or Indus.

Stone Town

With visits to the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum (People's Palace), Dr Livingstone's House and the Arab Fort amongst others, it is a fascinating look at the essence of Zanzibar. Jozani Forest

The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar island and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey (pictured opposite), which is endemic to Zanzibar. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve's perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Jozani is home to other species including Syke's monkey's, small buck and bushpigs. The elusive Zanzibar leopard (last sited several years ago) is said to feed here at night - perhaps this is why the reserve is only open during the day. Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

North Coast

Tours to the unspoilt north coast always end up at Ras Nungwi, a sleepy fishing village on the northern tip of Zanzibar island. It is the dhow building capital of Zanzibar, so you will be able to see the traditional methods of dhow construction in action. This area of Zanzibar has some fantastic beaches and nearby coral reefs which are ideal for diving and snorkelling. The local villagers have built a turtle sanctuary where injured turtles and other marine animals are nursed back to health before being released back into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Kizimkazi Mosque & Dolphin Tour

Situated on the southern point of the island, Kizimkazi fishing village is home to several schools of bottle-nosed dolphins which can often be sighted following a short boat trip from the village. If you are lucky, you may be able to swim quite close to the dolphins which can be a very rewarding experience. Kizimkazi is also the site of a 12th century mosque, the earliest evidence of Islam in East Africa, and is thus worth a visit for both natural and cultural reasons.

Prison Island

Once the site of a gaol for misbehaving slaves, the island lies just off the old stone town. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkelling, and has a lovely white beach for sun-bathing.

It is also home to a family of giant tortoises, imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. This island is ideal for a day-trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.

Mountain Views

These magnificent en-suite rooms, 28 square meters in size, boast spectacular mountain views and are surrounded by indigenous forest. The beds can be configured to either twin or king size beds. The bathrooms are equipped with a bath with overhead shower, enclosed toilet and underfloor heating. Other facilities in the room include: desk station, flat screen LCD TV, mini bar and tea/coffee making facilities.

These charming rooms are situated in the historical building. Four of the rooms boast sea-facing vistas across the Hout Bay Harbour to the Sentinel Mountain on the one side and Noordhoek on the other.

The rooms are all en-suite with either a shower or a bath with overhead shower. Stylish wall mosaics adorn the wall above the bath and stone-designed floors in the showers give a natural earthy feeling. In refurbishing the rooms we retained the unique charm of a bygone era but added modern touches to add comfort and style for your stay. The interior decor lends itself to a warm, calming & relaxed ambience. Room configurations vary from queen size to twin-bedded rooms. Tea & coffee making facilities are also available in each room. The Western Cape has endless sandy beaches. The combination of the two oceans offers a variety of beaches, all of which are very accessible from the Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel.

Hout Bay Beach
Just across the road from the hotel! The white sandy beautiful beach, popular with families, stretches from Chapmans Peak Drive to the Hout Bay Harbour and has spectacular mountain surrounds. Visitors can enjoy a cool swim, sunbathing and beach games. There are a number of water sports available on the beach. The best spot for swimming is the section closest to the hotel. Horse riding can be arranged along this beach, an amazing experience. Many whales have been spotted in the Bay. This occurs during the months of August - October. Whale spotting can be enjoyed from your private balcony in the sea facing rooms.

Llandudno Beach
Just a 10 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is considered to be one of the most picturesque beaches in South Africa, and consistently makes it into the top 10 beach in South Africa. Very popular with surfers but also ideal for picnics enjoying the sunset. This beach is patrolled by lifeguards due to strong currents.

Sandy Bay Beach
This can be reached by a 20 minute walk from Llandudno. It is totally enclosed by sand dunes and enjoys a degree of wind shelter. It is Cape Town´s main nudist beach, but this is not a necessity to enjoy the beach!

Camps Bay Beach & Glen Beach
Just a 15 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is situated on the edge of Table Mountain, bordered with palm trees. Camps Bay Beach is an activities beach, hosting events such as Beach Volleyball championships. Glen Beach is a popular spot for surfers. Across the road from the beach the promenade offers a number of trendy restaurants, cafes and bars. This beach is the most accessible of all beaches, and consequently can be a busy spot.

Clifton Beach
Just a 20 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. Clifton consists of four beaches, Clifton 1 to Clifton 4, which are separated by rocks and are totally sheltered from the wind. The fashionable beaches are popular with tourists and locals, and is often called the St Tropez of Cape Town. All of the beaches are accessible via steep stairs. The fourth beach is the most popular with families since it has the least steps.

Noordhoek Beach
Just a 15 minute drive South over the scenic Chapmans Peak Drive. The long sandy beach stretches for 8 km´s across Chapmans Peak to Onetime. This is a spectacular open beach, perfect for walking and horse riding. The waters are hazardous, but are still popular with some adventurous surfers.
The Kommetjie end of Long Beach is one of the most popular surfing spots in the Peninsula, attracting surfers, long boarders, body-boarders and swimmers as well.

Boulders Beach
Just a 30 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. The beach is situated just past Simon´s Town en-route to Cape Point, and is considered to be one of the best swimming beaches in Cape Town. It is also the home of the African penguins and a must-see spot.

Fish Hoek Beach
Just a 20 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is popular for a variety of activities, including sailing, surfing, paddling, snorkeling, swimming etc. It is a warm-water beach, and hence very popular with the little ones.

Muizenberg Beach
Just a 30 minute drive from Chapmans Peak Beach Hotel. This beach is famous on many Cape Town postcards with the colourful beach huts. The beach is safe for swimming and surfing. It is the home of the long board surfer and the soul of surfing in Cape Town. There are various other secluded beaches South along the road towards Kalk Bay.

The main lodge comprises of an entrance rondavel, leading to a spacious dining room allowing for both intimate and group dining, and a large lounge and library area leading onto a bar.

Double-sided fireplaces are always a place of contemplation in winter, while the shady verandah overlooking the waterhole, and the refreshing pool keep guests cool and entertained during summer.

For our younger guests we also have a private lounge offering television, dvd player, games and books.

The central lodge is surrounded on all sides by shady verandahs offering guests a variety of views out over the tranquil landscape, as well as over the swimming pool and pool deck.

A separate area known as a “boma” adjoins the main lodge where bush braais and special festivities are offered for our guests enjoyment.

Church service - We can advise times and locations of religious services in the area. A small chapel is available in the Amakhala Reserve for weddings and other religious ceremonies. This should be booked in advance.

Computer/Email - A computer can be made available for guest use should you require it.

Clothing - Dress code and clothing is informal. It is advisable to wear loose fitting and light garments in summer, layering clothing in winter. Sensible shoes are important in the rough terrain. A warm wind breaker jacket or jersey for game drives even in summer is a necessity. Neutral colored garments are advisable in the bush. Sun hats, sunglasses and swimming costume are required in summer.

Fleeced sweatshirts, golf shirts, robes and caps are available for purchase from the lodge should guests require any of these items.

Equipment - A good pair of binoculars is a recommendation especially for bird watching. Good photographs can be taken on game drives when the vehicle is stationary, but rarely when in transit as terrain is rough. Guests should bear this in mind when purchasing suitable camera equipment. The recommended film is 100-200 A.S.A. and a zoom lens is not always a necessity but recommended.

Food - Please inform management at Bukela of any specific dietary preferences you may have before arrival.

Coffee, tea, fresh juice and pastries are served before each game drive in addition to any snacks provided on the drive itself. Beverages and snacks over and above that mentioned can be requested throughout a guests stay, accounts for which may be settled on departure.

Game Lodge Amenities
Housekeeping - Suites are cleaned unobtrusively thrice daily while guests enjoy a game drive or meal. At no other time will guests be disturbed unless they request assistance. Our staff is always available to assist guests wherever necessary. Incoming calls may be received on the lodge cellular phone.

Information services - Guests will find directories of tourist information in each suite. Should guests require assistance with flights, transfers or accommodation reservations, or require that Hlosi assists with reputable tour operators, please let us know.

Laundry - Guests' personal items can be washed and ironed at a nominal fee. Laundry bags are provided in suite cupboards. Dry cleaning is unfortunately not offered.

First aid and Medical - A well stocked supply of over the counter medication is available to guests should they experience any physical discomfort during their stay at Bukela. Medical practitioners are also available 20 minutes drive away.

Telephone - There are telephones installed in each guest suite. Should guests require a cellphone, the lodge can make one available to them at standard cost. South African network providers MTN and Vodacom coverage is reasonable in most areas of the reserve.

Water -The water is derived from a borehole and not for human consumption. Complementary bottled water is provided.

Wines - Hlosi Lodge offers a versatile and well appointed selection of South African and International wines, sparkling wines and French champagne to suit your palate.

Weather - The region is temperate with summer conditions (October – March) reaching temperatures of 36C. Winter (April-September) brings many sunny days but evenings can be chilly. Rain falls mainly in the summer months and umbrellas are available in the main lodge for your use when traversing to your suite in these conditions.

The African climate can change dramatically whatever the season. Rangers will check weather reports before embarking on a game drive, but guests should please ensure that they are suitably attired in “layered” clothing for hot or cold conditions.

Luxury in the Kruger

The Kruger National Park and Mpumalanga has always fascinated me and will probably continue to do so. The place is just wonderful and with all the Private Reserves and activities on offer. I decided to treat my lovely wife at the Kapama Private Game Reserve for a long weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. Just the relaxed atmosphere and everything so perfectly in place made it worth the long drive and we just wished that we could stay for longer.

The food was something out of this world and with the two chefs on duty they had a treat for us at every meal. The Game Viewing was just as exceptional and the guides went out of their way to show us the wildlife of this special place. It is a pity that we only found out about the excellent spa facilities on our last day as this would have just been the perfect treat for our short stay atKapama Private Game Reserve.

The region surrounding the reserve is just as good and we spent a couple of days exploring some of the many attractions including the Blyde River Canyon, Kruger, Gods Window amongst others.

This was truly an amazing experience and should we find the time we will definitely be visiting the reserve again in the near future.

Addo Elephant National Park is one of the world’s great conservation success stories and embraces one of the highest concentrations of big game in Africa and thus offers some wonderful game viewing opportunities. Of the smaller animals the surricates and the flightless dung beetle are of great interest. Over 150 species of birds have been recorded in the area.
The vegetation that one encounters in the area is known as “Valley Bushveld” - this is a biome unique to the river valleys of the Eastern Cape. The plants are tough and drought resistant (Addo’s average annual rainfall is 385mm) with a high proportion of succulents much loved by elephants, black rhino and kudu. In 1997, Frazzitta Enterprises, one of the leading family-owned property investment companies in South Africa, bought and later transformed a neglected; three-storey building in Long Street into the stylish and luxurious boutique hotel it is today. The construction process was intense, with the entire building being demolished, leaving only four internal walls. The foundation was then substantially strengthened, and a floor a month was built until the impressive new seven-storey structure was completed.

The Italian flair of its owners, the Frazzitta family, is apparent in every feature of Urban Chic. From the high-quality finishes and imported stainless steel chandelier that graces the reception area to the minute attention to detail in all aspects of the hotel's operation, this owner- run boutique hotel leaves nothing to be desired.

THE COURSES

There is no doubt that Fancourt is South Africa’s premier golf resort, featuring three highly rated Championship golf courses as well as the Western Cape’s premier 18-hole public course.
Since opening in the early 90's with just 27 Gary Player-designed holes, Fancourt’s Outeniqua and Montagu golf courses have matured and developed into two of the finest 18-hole parkland layouts in the country. A round on either is a special experience, sculpted and finished as they are with rare attention to detail and designed with the coastal George winds in mind.
The Links at Fancourt was added in 2000, an awe-inspiring example of magnificent design and golf-course construction, about which designer Gary Player says: “Links golf is how the game originated and at The Links we take golfers back to the roots of golf – and they can play a ‘British Open’ all of their own!”
Lastly, Bramble Hill was added, a course that is distinctly Fancourt, yet has a friendly character all of its own. It is a course that can be tackled by beginner and seasoned campaigner alike, without the intimidation and pressure so often associated with celebrated championship courses.
